Preheat oven at 350 degrees F.
Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
In a bowl, whisk together, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Make a well in the center and set aside.
Toss 1 ¼ cups cranberries with ¼ cup granulated sugar. Set aside.
Whisk together buttermilk, the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, eggs, oil, zest and vanilla in a separate bowl until well combined. Pour the mix in the center well of the dry flour mixture and mix until dry ingredients are just moistened.
Stir sugared cranberries and walnuts in the batter. Pour batter in the loaf pan and bake for one hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out dry.
