Jewel of the Mediterranean
Cassis!
What is to be said about Cassis, France? A few things! It has always been a busy jewel of a village and port along the French Cote D’Azur. The area was inhabited by many tribes before the Romans but we do know that the Romans built a tiny port and tucked it into the white limestone hills of the area. From it’s Roman start we have what we know today as Cassis. The village has rebuilt itself many times from a prosperous fishing village to an artsy haven for Fauve painters (Matisse, Derain and Puy to name just a few) during 1904-1908. Today its well known as a retreat for tourist who feast on its delicacy of sea urchins shared with a glass of Cassidan AOC white wine.
Calaques and Cassis!
When visiting Cassis, Jackdaw Journeys tours, is always thrilled by our four hour boat cruise to a few of the famous Calaques (mini-fjords.)The Calaques are great craggy cliffs of limestone rising out of the lapis colored Mediterranean sea. The inlets provide spectacular bays that one can explore or just hang out in. Jackdaw Journeys will be returning to this magical area in October 2020. We are visiting Marseille this April 2022 from Massachusetts for the first time in France. Do you offer day tours of Cassis from Marseille or other tours in the area? We are thinking of a day in Arles and a day in Aix-en-Provence. Thank you for any itinerary suggestions or recommendations to other tour guides in the area.
