Provence Tour Day Eight Jackdaw Journeys

Day 1

Fly into Nice airport (NCE) to be greeted by your hostess/tour guide, Dee Poquette, and your driver for the week. Meet the group and head off to our first home away from home (Hotel Bérard), a 4-star hotel & spa tucked into the mountains of Provence. On the way we make a quick stop to visit the medieval village of Saint Paul de Vence for our tour of the famous Maison Godet, a perfumer that has been making beautiful scents since the 1900s. After enjoying our welcome cognac and biscuits (cookies) we proceed inside to sample the many scents of perfume and pick our the perfect scent for each other. Exploration continues in the village followed by a quick lunch before we hit the road again. Two hours later we find ourselves in one of my favorite towns, Le Cadière-d’Azur. A light welcome dinner awaits you on your first night in France.

Day 2

Experience the sights and sounds of a local farmer’s market where you’ll gather ingredients for today’s cooking lesson with our Michelin-rated chef in his kitchen set within the hotel’s culinary garden. Your afternoon is at leisure to explore the beautiful village and shops, relax by the pool, or use our discount code towards a spa appointment (please make your appointment three weeks in advance on the website) or you also have the option to hop in the car and drive with us to one or two of the many wineries in the Bandol region. Bandol is known for many of France’s white or rose wines. Tonight we dine in one of the small restaurants in the village.

Day 3

After breakfast, we travel to the historic village of Le Castellet. We find Le Castellet perched on the edge of a cliff nestled in the heart of the Bandol vineyards. After lunch in one of the outside cafes we are free to shop or take the time for the many photo ops in this village. From Le Castellet we drive a short distance to a neighboring village unknown by many tourists- Saint Anne de Evenos. This small village is the home of a medieval ruin that has been beautifully restored by the town’s people in the last three years. After a leisurely afternoon among the ruins we head back to our hotel.

Day 4

We head early to the market town of Sanary-sur-Mer. Sanary has been voted as one of the best markets in southern France. This port city provides us with our first experience of what French market shopping is all about. Purchases could be anything from olives, antiques, fresh fish of the day, local cheeses and eggs, native honey, straw market bags, shoes, sausages, French linens, French scarves, olive wood serving pieces, clothing or anything needed for everyday life in France. After about four hours for shopping mania, it’s time to head to another seaside town, Cassis. In Cassis we board our boat for a four hour relaxing cruise along the Mediterranean to the famous Roman Calaques, all the time enjoying the salty breeze and experiencing Provence from the sea – words can’t describe the striking color of the ocean, you’ll just have to experience it for yourself!

Day 5

We’re bidding au revoir to the mountains and move on to Aix-en-Provence, a gorgeous mini Paris filled with all the charm you’d expect in a quaint city that has been around for centuries. After checking into our hotel (Hotel Saint Christophe) we join our guide for our four hour walking food tour of Aix. We all usually agree that dinner tonight can be light after sampling so many French foods on our tour.

Day 6

Breakfast is had and then quickly out the door, across the street, to another market! We take the morning to wander through the beautiful city of Aix (pronounced “X”) – exploring her churches, fountains, museums, additional food and flower markets and cafes. The afternoon will find us in Salon de Provence at the world famous soap factory- Marius Fabre. This factory has been on site since 1900 and today, the fourth generation of the original family is still carrying on the tradition of soap making.

Day 7

Today (always on Sunday) we will take an early morning drive to a charming village called, L’lsle-sur-la-Sorgue. Le Sorgue is known worldwide for its authentic brocante (antique/ flea) markets. This is why we say to pack an extra (empty) bag – you’ll want it today to lug all of your antique treasures home with you! French linens, silverware, china, furniture…. the shopping is endless, it just depends how much room you have to take it all home! Our tour guide will help you barter along the way to get the best price if you need a little nudge.

Day 8

We say our goodbyes to Aix and make our way back to Nice but choose to stop in the stone village of Eze for a quick visit. It will be nice to be back in Nice, the city where we all began our journey together. We also say our goodbyes to our wonderful driver and check into our last hotel (Hotel Florence). This afternoon is spent exploring the beautiful ocean views, climbing the stairs to the top of the cliff  by the shore for the most incredible view, or just sit by the sea and enjoy a spritz.

Day 9

Our final day in Nice begins early in the morning at the market to meet up with our guide and chef owner of the Les Petits Farcis cooking school. With Rosa beside our side we tour the popular food market in old town Nice, buy our ingredients for our class and then stroll to Rosa’s kitchen! Who knows what classic dishes of the French Riviera we will learn how to cook? A leisurely lunch will follow in the cozy kitchen.

Day 10

Head back home, wherever that may be, with unforgettable memories.

Any meals not specified above – we’ve created our itinerary so our guests can truly experience Provence – some meals are included but for those that aren’t, the beauty of our tour is the flexibility to eat with the group or do what suits you best. Our goal is for you to truly relax and rejuvenate, not feel strapped to a rigid timeline.

Your return transfer to the airport – some guests decide to tack on a few extra days, while others might decide to leave on our last “official” day. Depending on flight times and schedules, each guest arranges their own transport back to the airport simply by asking the front desk to book a taxie for you. If you are leaving from our hotel in Nice, this cost can be $15-$20 per person as we are only about 25-30 minutes away from the airport.

Jackdaw Journeys truly is an experience for the senses, set in magical Provence. We hope you’ll join us, soon!
